On Sunday 27th February I was at home trimming some hedgerows in the orchard before the deadline of 1st March, when I came across these Cushion Brackets Phellinus pomaceus growing on some Blackthorn trees within the hedge. There was a small little cluster on one tree and a separate on a nearby Hawthorn. They have a hoof shaped rounded bulge similar to Hoof Fungus but the velvet cream/fawn white lower rim and the cinnamon margin make these a Cushion Bracket fungus. They are widespread and common growing in deciduous woodlands and often in suburban gardens.
